An Entrepreneur’s Leap From Nike To Mister OK’s Essentials

Before Mister Ok’s Essentials launched in 2017, she spent years climbing the corporate ranks of Nike as a designer.

Before Mister OK’s Essentials launched in 2017, she spent years climbing the corporate ranks of Nike as a designer where she started as an intern. Deep down, however, Precious Hannah-King knew she was an entrepreneur and one day she wanted to have her own “something.”

Precious Hannah-King is the founder of Mister OK’s Essentials which launched in 2017.

But before starting Mister OK’s Essentials in Portland, Hannah-King admits she was “10-toes-down” and dedicated to Nike.

“I was corporate all day,” she admitted.

Networking At The Corporate Level To Build A Networth

Embracing her unique opportunity as a designer at Nike, she focused on learning. Her job was to design sneakers, apparel, accessories and practically anything Nike wanted her to design. When she wasn’t at her desk, she dedicated time to meeting with colleagues. Anyone who had something to teach, she met over coffee. Aiming for ten conversations a day, the networking taught her how to talk and how to connect with people authentically.

“It wasn’t about what “you” could do for me, but creating a relationship with [my colleagues],” Hannah-King said.

Her colleagues, she shared, skeptically asked her what she needed from them. But it wasn’t that she needed anything from them, per se. If anything, Hannah-King said she wanted to learn who they were and how they got to their positions.

“I want to understand ‘your’ struggles,” she said she often told her colleagues. “so I don’t go through the same thing you went through.”

With colleagues referring her to another, she dedicated time and effort to meeting everyone. She said she was authentic with her intentions in her networking, too. The more she reached out, her network grew.

Partnerships and Collaborations: ‘People Talking To People’

Her days at Nike that taught her the importance of collaboration. So at the opportunity to collborate, she jumped. The surreal moment happend during a pitch meeting with her favorite tea company, in Oregon, the Steve Smith Teamaker.

Fr8qu8ncy’s Emery Morrison, left, linked up with Precious Hannah-King of Mister OK’s Essentials o discuss the impact of partnerships and collaborations.

Calling it one of her favorite collaborations, the collaboration focused on an experiences for the five senses. The soy candle was a wooden wicked made of cedar and bergamot and gentle notes of jasmine, tonka and vetiver. And it was paried with the teas Lord Bergamot and/or Jasmine Silver Tip.

Mister OK’s Essentials partnered with Steven Smith Teamaker for a unique experience that taps into the five senses with a candle for scent and tea for taste just by sipping a cuppa tea.

Trying not to fangirl during the presentation she said she had to tell herself to keep her cool. After all — “Partnerships and collaborations,” Hannah-King said. “are people talking to people.”

It was the meeting with the renowned Oregon teamakers that she knew she was on to something special.

“If I could do this partnership with them,” she said. “I wondered who else I could partner with.”

That’s when the other brands wanted the hand-pour quality of Mister OK’s Essentials.

So, naturally, for Hannah-King, got to work. Her partnerships boasts corporate heavy hitters like Black Footwear Forum, Adidas, Jordan, Nike, BET, Steven Smith Teamaker, Google, Portland Gear and more.

One Collaboration Leads To The Next

There’s no denying that the first collaboration opened the doors for the second and third and more for Mister OK’s Essentials. All of it, Hannah-King attributes back to networking.

According to Fr8qu8ncy founder, Emery Morrison, forming partnerships provides insight into market trends to better connect with audiences and consumers. The results are captivating, too.

Morrison and Hannah-King first met at the July 2024 Essence Festival in the Soko Market. Since the duo have met regularly to discuss partnerships and collaborations with included talks on 2025 collaborations leading up to the Grammy’s Week Fr8qu8ncy Networking Event in Los Angeles on Jan. 29.

“Package collaboration with data-driven insights with experiential marketing,” Morrison said. “And find yourself on an illuminating path to profitability for both established brands and entrepreneurial newcomers like Mister OK’s Essentials.”

“It’s about delivering,” Hannah-King pointed out. “There are deadlines, deliverables and making sure it’s completed.”

Mister OK’s Essentials has different partnerships with a number of corporate brands that also includes Adidas and Google.

Mister OK’s Essentials: The Modern Scent Experience

She didn’t think she’d ever leave her corporate job. Leaving Nike, meant embracing her dream to “own something” which eventually led to the launch of Mister OK’s Essentials — a modern scent experience of handcrafted candles and natural bath and body products.

Mister Ok's Essentials Bachelor Pad candle
Mister OK’s Essentials candle Bachelor Pad is among the unique scents from the collection of natural soy candles.

“Being in corporate you learn a lot of different things,” Hannah-King said. “But I think it’s imperative for people to understand that you need to make a decision whether you’re going to stay there and be a lifer in corporate or if you’re going to move on and say, ‘I want to do something different.’”

This vision led her to establish Mister OK’s Essentials. With Mister OK’s Essentials, she envisioned a space where scents evoke emotions, spark memories and create a sense of sanctuary in everyday life.

Every day, Hannah-King is dedicated to crafting unique and evocative fragrances that elevate the ambiance of any space.  Her promise — real soy candles, refreshing room sprays and nourishing bath and body care products without the gunk.
